Residents evacuated from Gateshead flats due to 'burst pipe'

Residents had to be evacuated from a Dunston apartment complex because of flooding.

Gateshead Housing Company posted on social media that flooding had occurred at Eslington Court, putting it out of bounds.

Speculation on social media suggested that the flooding was caused by a burst pipe.

A statement from the housing provider described an "ongoing flood" but said that everyone living in the flats is safe.

It said: "There is an ongoing flood situation at Eslington Court, Teams.

"Our priority is the safety of our residents, and we are pleased to say they have all been evacuated safely, in line with Public Health Covid guidelines."

The company said that residents have all been offered hotel accommodation.

It added: "Due to the lack of water and power supply, residents can not yet return to their homes.

"Rest centres, and transport to them, have been set up.

"At the rest centres, we will offer hotel accommodation to everyone who needs it.

"Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police, British Red Cross are all assisting.

"We will keep you updated on further developments."
