Residents 'evacuated' as fire crews rush to smoking 'pan of food' in Tameside mill conversion

People had to be evacuated from their homes this afternoon after a pan of food caught fire.

Fire crews rushed to Cavendish Mill, Ashton, shortly after 2.15pm this afternoon, Monday August 2, after a smoke alarm signalled a fire had broken out in the Grade II* listed building.

Engines from five different stations, Ashton, Hollins, Hyde, Mossley, and Stalybridge, raced to the scene, alongside a technical response unit from Ashton and a hydraulic platform from Oldham.

However, when crews arrived, they discovered that the fire, which had started in a pan of food on a cooker, had already been extinguished.

One woman, believed to be the person who discovered the flames, was treated using oxygen therapy for smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Services (GMFRS) said: "At approximately 2:15pm today, Monday August 2, firefighters were notified by a smoke alarm to a fire on Cavendish Street, Ashton-under-Lyne.

"Fire engines from Ashton, Hollins, Hyde, Mossley and Stalybridge fire stations arrived quickly at the scene. A Technical Response Unit from Ashton and a Hydraulic Platform from Oldham were also dispatched.

“The fire involved a pan of food on a cooker and was out when firefighters arrived at the scene.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke, and one woman was treated by GMFRS personnel using oxygen therapy."

Traffic along Cavendish Street was restricted earlier this afternoon, but the road is now free of restrictions for passing vehicles.
