Residents evacuated as bomb squad called to Manchester city centre

Residents were evacuated from their homes after a 'suspicious item' was found in Manchester city centre.

Police were called to the scene on Booth Street East just after 10pm last night.

A cordon was put in place in the area 'as a safety precaution'.

Residents from nearby buildings were evacuated.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene to assess the 'suspicious item'.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the area has been made safe, though the M.E.N has contacted Greater Manchester Police for further details.

A post on the GMP City Centre page, posted at around 12.45am, read: "At around 10.04pm this evening, (24 June) police were called to a report of a suspicious item on Booth Street East in Manchester City Centre.

"Officers attended and a cordon has been put in place as a safety precaution.

"A number of residential buildings surrounding the area have been evacuated.

"EOD have been notified and are due to attend the scene to assess the item."
