Residents evacuated and road closed after 'deliberate fire started'

Nearby residents were evacuated after a "deliberate" fire was started in Bristol last night (June 1).

Firefighters from Avon Fire and Rescue and Avon and Somerset Police officers were called to the fire in Eastville Park at 10.54pm.

In a social media post the fire service tweeted: "@AFRSTemple are in attendance at a fire at the tennis courts at Eastville Park. @AFRSSouthmead and @AFRSKingswood en route. #fire."

A spokesperson for the service told Bristol Live this morning (June 2): "Crews from Temple, Kingswood and Southmead were mobilised at 10.54pm to reports of a tree fire on Fishponds Road, Eastville.

"On arrival, firefighters found an area of trees on fire and a storage container affected.

"Crews used two 45mm jets and one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire.

"Police were also in attendance. The cause is thought to be deliberate."

Police are now investigating the fire.

A police spokesperson said officers are reviewing CCTV in the area and urged people to come forward if they know any more about the incident.

They said: "We were made aware of the fire at approximately 11pm last night in Fishponds Road in Eastville.

"Officers attended to support the fire service who were on the scene dealing with the incident.

"A road closure was put in place and a number of people were evacuated from nearby properties as a precaution. They were soon able to return home and did not require alternative accommodation.

"CCTV enquiries will be carried out as part of our ongoing investigation into what happened.

“Anyone with information should call 101, or report it online, giving reference number 5220119393.”
