Residents evacuated after 'deliberate' fire at Glasgow flat as man arrested

Residents have been evacuated following a 'deliberate' fire at a flat in Glasgow. The alarm was raised shortly before 2pm today when officers received reports of a blaze on Vaila Street in the Lambhill area of the city.

Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, raced to the property, and people from surrounding homes were told to leave for safety reasons.

Hero fire fighters remain at the scene this evening and the road has been locked down while efforts continue to extinguish the inferno, with motorists and pedestrians urged to avoid the area.

It is understood no-one has been hurt or taken to hospital. However a 24-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident, which cops are treating as 'wilful'.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 13.54pm on Wednesday, 10 August to reports of a fire on Vaila St, Glasgow Road.

"Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene and crews remain in attendance."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2pm on Wednesday, 10 August, 2022, police and emergency services were called to a fire at a flat on Vaila Street in Glasgow.

“Residents from surrounding properties were evacuated and no-one was required to be taken to hospital. The fire is being treated as wilful and a 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“The road is currently closed and we would ask people to avoid the area.”
