Huge flames fill Hyson Green street with smoke as fire rips roof off house

Residents described how they woke to see plumes of smoke billowing across the street, as a fire ripped off the roof of a three-storey home in Hyson Green.

Fire crews were called to the scene in Maples Street, just off Alfreton Road , at 1.43am on Thursday, May 15. Police were also in attendance.

People gathered in the streets to watch the drama unfold as large flames engulfed the roof of the top floor property, which is believed to be privately rented.

Some residents were asked to evacuate their homes.

Firefighters spent three hours battling the blaze, and no one is believed to have been injured.

At lunchtime on Thursday, police were still at the scene and an inspection of the property was underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Shattered glass could be seen strewn across the pavement, as well as a broken window frame.

A police cordon remained across the front the property, with an office guarding it.

"They had a big ladder and they had it over the roof.

"It is usually a quiet street."

Shazia Shafi, 37, who lives on the street with her husband and her young daughter, said they woke to hear noises coming from outside - and a woman shouting.

She said: "I woke up about 1am and there was lots of noise, one lady was shouting. We saw the fire, it was big.

"My husband was going to call 999 and then the fire service arrived.

"There were four appliances in attendance, one hose reel jet, and an aerial ladder platform.
