Residents come out with shovels and brushes as Storm Dennis floods Treorchy street

When a Treorchy street was flooded with rain, mud and rubble during Storm Dennis the local community stepped in to help.

More than 30 people armed with shovels and brushes turned out to help the residents of Dumfries Street.

The street flooded after a blocked culvert brought water cascading into the street from the hill above.

They even built their own flood defence to try and save more of the homes from flooding.

Here are the residents hard at work clearing up:

It brought mud and rubble with it and some homes in the street were flooded.

"There have been problems in the past," she said. "But there hasn't been flooding like this for around 16 years. Some flood defences were put in place but I think there have been problems with maintenance recently and it had flooded.

"There seems to be tonnes and tonnes of rubble that has come down off the hill with it, but it has been amazing to see so many people come out to help.

"There are grandfathers, sons and grandsons all willing to help out with their brushes and shovels. That is the amazing place about here, everyone pulls together in a crisis.

"It is devastating for the people who have been flooded, but great to see the support for them."

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council says that Storm Dennis has been officially declared a major incident in the South Wales region.

A spokesman said: "The council continues to do all it can to assist residents at this difficult time.

"We have established four rest centres throughout our county borough for those people evacuated from their homes."

Catherine Harcombe, whose parents lived on the street, said a neighbour called her at home in Chepstow at 3am to say there had been flooding.
