Canberra residents are being caught on hidden videos illegally dumping rubbish in public places.

Transport Canberra has released footage of several incidents where people have discarded metal products and construction materials in unauthorised places.

The rule breakers have been caught and fined through videos captured by cameras hidden in undisclosed locations, including in trees surrounding problem areas.

COVID-19 NEWS:

An officer responsible for finding and fining the rule breakers, Shannon, said at any one time there are up to 16 cameras hidden around Canberra.

"Illegal dumping is a problem, one of those problems that is really hard to fix," the compliance officer said.

"It affects the amenity and the safety of our city."

Shannon said while it's "disheartening" when he comes across the dumping, he gets great satisfaction from finding the criminals and cleaning up an area.
