Residents can't park as zig zags painted at school that closed 18 years ago

A man is furious after Keep Clear School lines were painted outside the home he has lived in for eight years - despite the school closing down 18 years ago.

Greg Smith 56, says a contractor for North Yorkshire County Council has painted yellow lines and zig zags outside the converted primary school where he lives.

Greg tried to explain to the contractor that the school had been closed for 18 years - but they carried on with the work, reports YorkshireLive.

He has now taken to parking his car down the road, in case he gets a fine for parking outside the non-existent school.

Greg said: "The sign is right outside our house. It's where my wife usually parks our car and where our neighbours park their cars.

"It's a pretty well-used parking area, and it's actually quite a coincidence that no cars were there the day the contractor came, otherwise it would've been pretty hard to paint the sign.

"My understanding is if you park on a 'school keep clear sign' you could get a fine, a traffic warden could hand it out.

"So, since it's been done, we've been parking elsewhere - a bit of a walk from our house."

He added: "As my wife has said, it's been a rotten year, and it was the icing on the cake to see these lines painted. It would be just our luck to get a ticket."

The school keep clear lines outside Mr Smith's home

"There were old school warning signs on the road, but they were painted over at the time the house was converted," he said.

"You could still see the elevation of the lines. But that was it, we've had no issues until this happened."

But "a week last Friday" Mr Smith saw a contractor come to paint the lines.

"I went over to speak to him and I said to him, 'You do realise this is a private house'," Mr Smith said.

Despite his protests, the contractor continued to paint the sign.

Greg says he has contacted the council but hasn't heard back from then.

"As it stands, I've still not heard anything back from Highways," he said. "Not a dicky bird.

"I just want the council to remove it, it's possible to paint over it or burn it off, I just want to see action from the council.

"We're still parking down the road as I'm concerned if they do turn up to sort it they won't be able to because there will be cars there.

"I just want them to clarify what they're going to do.

"I can see the funny side of it. There has been some in incredulity in the village. People have been saying, 'Are they using 20 year old maps?'.

"I'm in a mixed mind about it though. Whether it's funny or not, it's pretty stupid."

Highways area manager, Melisa Burnham, said: "We are really sorry, this is a genuine mistake and the lines and markings will be removed as soon as possible.

"There will be no prosecutions for people parking on the markings in the meantime.”
