Residents asked to recycle coffee pods in Aus first trial

Thousands of Newcastle households are being called on to join an Australian-first coffee pod recycling program.

The Curby Coffee Capsule trial will allow 3000 local homes to recycle aluminium coffee pods through their kerbside bins, by using special orange bags to collect their used capsules, which they place in their usual recycling bin for collection.

City of Newcastle joins Mosman and Willoughby as the first Australian councils to trial the scheme, which is being run by recyclers iQ Renew and CurbCycle.

The capsules are transferred to the Nespresso recycling system for separating into coffee grounds and aluminium. The aluminium will save 95 per cent of the energy required to source the metal from scratch, while coffee grounds will go to a commercial compost.

The trial will inform development of a national coffee capsule recycling scheme, being developed in collaboration with Planet Ark.

The trial is limited to the first 3000 local homes that enrol by December 10 at curbythebilby.com.au.
