Residents are 'living in hell' over huge water system works in Forest Fields

Residents have spoken out about their anger over huge works taking place alongside a residential street.

Neighbours living on Gladstone Street in Forest Fields said they get up early in the morning to noises coming from the site and struggle with driving in the area.

Work has been underway for weeks on the main residential road to upgrade the water network in the Forest Fields area.

Severn Trent has invested around £1.5m to install almost 6km of brand-new pipes across this part of the city aiming to help reduce the number of leaks and bursts.

Laid end-to-end in a straight line, the new pipes would reach from Forest Recreation Ground to junction 26 of the M1.

Two teams of engineers have worked together to finalise the project as soon as possible and work has been underway on Gladstone Street and Laurie Avenue from Monday (June 28).

Housewife Janette Atkinson, of Gladstone street, 56, said: "They have to do what they have to do but it has been going on for weeks.

"It is a difficult situation for all the residents.

"The work starts early every morning - it is a nuisance.

"It is very annoying for the residents who have cars and struggle to drive and find a place to park in the area."

Full time mum Susanne Holleworth, a resident in the area, 46, added: "When you get a taxi here it is an absolute nightmare.

"Cars have to drive all the way around because they cannot turn this way - one lane is completely blocked."

Housewife Shafna Bibi, of Gladstone street, 40, added: "It has been a nightmare.

"It is like living in hell.

"At the end of the day, they have to do what they have to do.

"But it has been very difficult for all of us - especially in the morning.

"It is a problem with parking as well.

"Most residents had to find other place to park because this road is congested."

This major network upgrade is expected to take approximately nine months to complete.

Helen Purdy from Severn Trent, said: “We know it’s still a challenging time for many people right now, but making sure our customers have a reliable water supply is as vital now as it’s ever been.

"That’s why you’ll see our teams working in the Forest Fields area to carry out these essential upgrades.

“The new pipes will save the equivalent of 200,000 cups of tea or 170,000 pints of beer a day”

“We will be doing everything we can to minimise the disruption and we’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience as we get this essential work done.

"Once all of the work is complete, the area will have a modern and reliable water network that will last for generations.”
