Residents' anger as street is flooded for a fourth time

People in a Nottinghamshire town who have been faced with more than two weeks of flooding say they are at their "wits' end".

Nottinghamshire County Council spent £430,000 to improve drainage in Thoresby Dale, Hucknall, after hundreds of homes were hit with heavy floods.

A new surface water pipe along with new gullies for drainage was constructed less than two years ago, and residents believed they would never experience problems again.

But after Storm Dennis hit they were left with what has been dubbed 'the Thorseby lake' around their homes.

Four homes were trapped in flood water for 60 hours, with Severn Trent using a water tanker to try and keep the water under control.

And on Sunday, February 23, they were hit again, with Ian Stevens, 60, who lives in one of the affected homes with his wife, now concerned for the future of his property.

He said: "This is the fourth time in less than three weeks. We are now at our wits' end. The council came out last week and cleared an obstruction and they thought they had cleared it.

"But at 7.15am on Sunday I was woken by a neighbour. I stepped out the door into water. If it was not for the neighbour we would have had water in the house.

"It was rising so quickly. It rose by six inches.

"We knew we had to get the drain covers up and to get the water away. In half an hour we got it down into the street to ease off the properties.

"This needs prioriting. People have been up in the early morning battling this.

"Our worry is that in 2013, we had only been here six months, our downstairs was lost (by floods).

"To see your brand new house being put into a skip is heartbreaking and we don't want that situation again because I don't think I could take it."

Gary Wood, Nottinghamshire County Council’s highways group manager, said: "We are sorry residents are continuing to experience flooding issues on Thoresby Dale in Hucknall.

"Our drainage systems have been tested to their limits over the last few weeks with the combination of both Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis, leading to exceptional conditions.

"Investigations into this highways flooding are ongoing and our incident response teams have been on site to pump water out and monitor the situation.

"We are working as quickly as possible to ascertain the root cause and resolve this road flooding issue."
