Residents amused by spelling blunder on Bristol road sign for Chippenham

A misspelled road sign has been spotted in Bristol by bewildered residents.

The new signpost located near the Crown Tavern near Old Market should direct traffic towards Chippenham, as well as Cirencester and Bath.

Instead, the wrongly painted sign points towards 'Chippinham'.

The blunder was pointed out by a Bristol Live reader who hoped the local authority would correct the mistake.

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: "The relevant officers have been notified and will be in touch with the contractor to look into this and rectify the issue."

This is not the first time such a spelling error in Bristol has made the news.

Bemused parents once discovered workmen had bungled painting a school sign outside Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School in Lawrence Weston.

In large letters they had written 'KEEP CELAR' instead of Keep Clear.

And in 2014, sign painters misspelled "bus" while completing roadworks in Old Market - not far from the most recent mistake.

Rather than "Bus stop" painted in large yellow letters, workmen had painted 'BUP STOP', to the amusement of locals.
