Residential street goes up in flames in dramatic Doctor Who filming

The ongoing Doctor Who filming in Cardiff has taken an explosive turn with more military truck action in one of the capital's suburbs. Residents of Penylan in Cardiff have had crews and cast on the streets including the tenth Doctor, David Tennant and Catherine Tate, as well as new incarnation of Rose, played by Yasmin Finney.

Residents of Axminster Road were told by Doctor Who production company Bad Wolf that they would be filming for the new series on the road for five days. Previous pictures snapped by fans showed David and Catherine on set and vehicles being set on fire.

The latest fan footage shows a very impressive explosion where a van flipped and spun in the air before crashing to the ground in a cloud of black smoke and red flames. The explosion is then applauded by the crew working on the set. You can read where else in Wales Doctor Who has been filmed here. It's thought to be the first episode of the newest series and fans near the location earlier this week also caught sight of an alien Beep The Meep!

Ncuti Gatwa will be stepping into the role of Doctor Who for the new series, which sees Russell T Davies back in charge, and the Sex Education star will follow Jodie Whittaker in the role which celebrates its 60th anniversary next year.

Jodie still has one episode left to air in the role of the Doctor, which will run for an extended 90 minutes. Russell said: "She's got an enormous finale, epic finale, 90-minute finale in October. We're polite gentlemen, it's only right and fair to shut up. 2023, you'll be fed up of us, we'll be everywhere, but until then, we bow to Jodie and love her and step back."

While there is no confirmed date for Jodie's final episode it will be airing in autumn 2022 on BBC One. Many fans are also asking who will be Ncuti's companion and we've rounded up everyone believed to be in the running here.
