Resident speaks of shock after huge hole appears on her Kirkby street

A resident has spoken of her shock after a massive hole developed in the road outside her home.

Cherry Plume, a resident on Longhill Rise in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, noticed the hole had appeared outside her house on April 23.

Concerned, she alerted oncoming drivers to turn around, before others then contacted Nottinghamshire County Council to get the road closed off.

She says the hole has grown "noticeably" larger since she first took a picture, and that highways maintenance teams were on the scene "within the hour".

"I came back from walking the dog and all my neighbours were out", she told Nottinghamshire Live.

"So with social distancing of course, I started flagging all the oncoming cars [telling them] to stop and turn around.

"A number of them also rang the police and council, they said they have sent the highway maintenance team to come and block the road.

"Highway maintenance came within the hour and put barriers around the hole, and put road closed signs up.

"It has noticeably got larger than the photo suggests, and some neighbours have speculated the drains have collapsed."

Nottinghamshire County Council, which oversees highways across the county, has confirmed it is investigating the hole.

The road has also been closed while repairs take place.

Johnny Davis, a spokesman for the authority, said: "Our emergency response team attended Longhill Rise, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, following reports of a hole developing in the road.

"They installed barriers to make the area safe and have temporarily closed the road to traffic.

"We have reported the issue to Severn Trent Water to investigate and will work with them to ensure the road reopened safely."

A Severn Trent spokesperson added: “We’re investigating our sewer network for any problems that could be causing the hole in the road.

"If any issues are found, it will be our priority to fix it and get everything back to normal as a quickly as possible.”
