Resident hits out as cars pack lane near Hardwick Hall

A resident living near a National Trust site has hit out at drivers for parking up on their street.

They say Norwood Lane in Teversal, Sutton-in-Ashfield, has been busy with visitors since lockdown began, as they said walkers are using it to access nearby Hardwick Hall.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said some people parking up on the street "don't know the meaning of" lockdown and many have been using the area regularly since last March.

They added that "none of them" are locals, as there are just nine houses located on the lane.

They told Nottinghamshire Live: "They are walkers, mostly with dogs.

"The National Trust [site] is five minutes through the woods.

"None are locals as there are only nine houses on this lane.

"Since Covid on March 20 it’s just got stupid with Covid tourists.

"Lockdown - that’s a laugh. They don’t know the meaning of the word."

The concern comes following confusion during lockdown over what constitutes "staying local" during the third national restrictions.

Police in neighbouring Derbyshire have made the headlines on several occasions, after turning people away and issuing fines to those travelling long distances during the lockdown.

Government guidance on the issue states: "If you do leave home for a permitted reason, you should always stay in your local area - unless it is necessary to go further, for example to go to work.

"Staying in your local area means stay in the village, town, or part of the city where you live."

One "permitted reason" for leaving the house during lockdown is for exercise, either with your household or bubble".

However, guidance does state that people must not travel for exercise "outside your local area".

A notice on Hardwick Hall's website adds: "In line with government guidance, outdoor spaces only at Hardwick are open for local visitors to access for walks."
