Resident fined £400 for leaving mattress on pavement in middle of the night

A Bristol resident has been fined £400 for sneaking out in the middle of the night and leaving a mattress on the pavement in their street.

That deed was spotted by a neighbour, who contacted the authorities and reported their neighbour for doing it.

The council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team came out and took a statement, and armed with that report, knocked on the door of the resident who left the mattress, who has not been named.

“They fully admitted depositing the mattress on the highway and were issued with a £400 fine, which was paid immediately,” said a spokesperson for the Neighbourhood Enforcement Team.

The incident happened in Freemantle Road, between Stapleton Road and the M32 in Eastville - an area that is so dogged by mattresses being left on the pavement, it became the standard joke of a satirical local Facebook page called Get The Easton Look.

The council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team urged other residents in Bristol to report things like this that they see.

“Public reporting is invaluable for helping our work and being able to successfully fine fly-tippers,” the spokesperson added.
