Capcom says Resident Evil Requiem has surpassed 5 million units sold worldwide less than a week after launch, making it one of the company’s fastest early sellers in the modern Resident Evil era.
Requiem launched on Feb. 27, and Capcom’s sales update states that on March 4, it already sold 5 million copies. And it’s not even the mysterious “units shipped” that companies like to use when they want to seem their game more successful than it actually is: Capcom is pretty explicit that this is sold copies and not just retail loading.
This commercial start matches the game’s reception well. On PlayStation 5, Requiem currently holds an 89 Metascore and a whopping 9.5 user score on Metacritic, while on Steam, it’s sitting at “Overwhelmingly Positive,” with 96% of nearly 25,000 user reviews marked positive at the time of writing.
This reception is a major reason Requiem is already being treated as an early Game of the Year contender, though this year has an obvious caveat: it’s still the GTA 6 year, unless Rockstar decides to move it again from the current Nov. 19 date.
Requiem’s first-week sales also stand out when stacked against recent Resident Evil launches using Capcom’s own early benchmarks. The company has never been consistent when announcing the number after the game’s release, but the comparison can still be made:
- Resident Evil 4 Remake sold over 3 million units in its first two days.
- Resident Evil Village shipped over 3 million units shortly after its release (notice the usage of “shipped” instead of “sold”).
- Resident Evil 2 Remake shipped 3 million units in its first week.
- Resident Evil 3 Remake shipped 2 million units five days after release.
- Resident Evil 7 shipped over 2.5 million units shortly after its release.
Even with the shipments vs. sales distinction, the comparison still makes it clear that Resident Evil Requiem is on another level of success, which should please Capcom and the developers.
Capcom didn’t give an updated series sales with this announcement, but if the numbers from the company’s quarterly report are to be believed, the number is almost at 190 million copies sold, and almost $9 billion of revenue.
We also don’t know what Resident Evil Requiem’s sales breakdown per console is, but recently, Capcom stated that almost 50 percent of its game sales comes from Steam.
