There is a new mod created for the "Resident Evil 4" remake that was recently released, which allows for a co-op multiplayer experience, a first for the iconic game.
Many players have expected this experience to be delivered by Capcom themselves, but the feature was only made available to other titles in the lineup, and not for this fourth mainline installment.
'Resident Evil 4' Remake Co-Op Mod Is Here
A new mod from a creator named "claybtv" debuts a co-op experience for one of the most famous "RE" games in Capcom's franchise. The mod, called "Resident Evil 4 Multiplayer," is now available to download on Nexus Mods. This new multiplayer experience on the "Resident Evil 4" remake works by syncing up two separate PC copies of the game, dropping a second player directly into Leon's story.
The mod supports a range of character options for the second player as rather than locking the second slot to one specific character, players can choose from available options like Wesker or Ashley, and running two Leons at the same time is also possible.
According to GameRant, enemies, events, and switches are all synchronized between both players, meaning the full campaign can be experienced together from start to finish. The mod gives the "Resident Evil 4" remake a co-op experience closer to what "Resident Evil 5" offered, where two players work through the story side by side as equal participants.

Getting the mod up and running does require some coordination between both players before jumping in. Both people need to be at the same point in the game before syncing up, so there is a bit of setup involved before sessions can begin.
Once in, the second player takes on an active role in the campaign rather than a passive one, which sets it apart from the approach taken in "Resident Evil Revelations 2," where the second player had limited offensive options and less meaningful involvement in the story.
The "Resident Evil 4" co-op mod adds to a growing list of similar fan-made projects in 2026. Multiplayer mods for "The Witcher 3," "Kingdom Hearts 3," and "Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2" have either launched or been announced this year, pointing to a steady demand among PC players for co-op experiences in games that were never designed with them in mind.
New Co-Op Mod Is Still In Beta
The mod is currently in beta, and players should expect some rough edges during play. Lag and stuttering enemy movement are among the known issues, and certain sections of the game are more prone to bugs than others.
The Del Lago boss encounter, for example, is noted as a particularly glitchy area. Accessing the inventory also pauses the game for the second player, which is worth keeping in mind during sessions.
Console players are not able to use the mod, as it is exclusive to PC. On the official front, Capcom has not announced any multiplayer features for the modern version of "Resident Evil 4" or confirmed plans for a "Resident Evil 5" remake.
That said, the series continues to expand with the announced "Resident Evil: Veronica," a remake of "Code: Veronica," which is currently in development.
