Resident calls for litter-strewn East Kilbride street to be cleaned-up

A frustrated resident is calling for an end to overflowing bins and waste strewn on the street once and for all.

The News has been supporting a bid to clean-up East Kilbride, highlighting a number of filthy spots in the town and areas of Avondale.

Politicians and green campaigners have slammed ‘dumb dumpers’ who leave a trail of rubbish in their wake.

Culprits can now be given a fixed penalty notice of £200 from South Lanarkshire council for fly-tipping and anyone convicted could face a fine of up to £40,000 and up to two years imprisonment.

The latest blackspot which has become a blight for householders is Denholm Crescent.

Cost of school lunches in South Lanarkshire goes up

Resident Eileen MacIntyre told how bins are regularly overflowing and “just days” after the area is cleaned up more rubbish is dumped and “it is as bad as ever”.

She said: “It’s disgusting – the bins are full to the gunnel and folk just keep adding more which ends up spilling over onto the street.

“Then flats are emptied by landlords and stuff is left dumped for weeks.”

She went on: “And no sooner is it cleaned up than more rubbish is dumped and it’s a mess again.

“It doesn’t help that folk who don’t live in the flats are dumping their rubbish too – they thinks it’s already a mess so who cares.

“The blue recycling bins end up being contaminated, the council won’t lift them and they are left lying.

“Folk are having to walk by it and it’s stinking. It must also attract vermin so surely it’s an environmental hazard.”

Eileen added: “Something needs to be done as it’s not fair on those of us who deal with our rubbish properly and try and keep the place clean and tidy.”

Political row erupts over double increase in private hospital patient figures across NHS Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire Council executive director of housing and technical services Daniel Lowe said: “The block at Denholm Crescent is factored by the council and comprises eight privately owned properties.

“We will liaise with waste services and write to the residents to remind them of their responsibility to dispose of refuse appropriately.”

The council’s head of facilities, waste and grounds services Alistair McKinnon said: “It is each resident’s responsibility to manage the waste they generate in line with the council’s policies and procedures, to ensure that waste or recyclable material is put into the correct bin and that bins are presented for collection on the scheduled day.

“If there is an issue with pests or statutory nuisance then this can be referred to the council’s environmental services team.”
