Research shows more than 23 million Brits will work beyond age of 65

More than 23million Britons will work beyond their 65th birthday – with one in five saying they’ll be 75 before they retire, research reveals.

That’s almost three-quarters of UK workers having to graft for longer – up from six in 10 in 2015.

The rising cost of living means seven in 10 have no choice but to work on, while two in three say a poor return on their savings is leaving them without enough cash to manage in their older age .

The survey found one in three needs to continue to work much later in life and earn a wage because their pension savings aren’t enough.

This rises to two in five for those aged 45 to 54 years-old.

Meanwhile, one in four workers says they can no longer rely on the state pension to make ends meet and will have to carry on earning to boost their savings – up from one in five last year.

Not everyone views working for longer as a grim prospect. Three in 10 say they plan to work beyond 65 as they enjoy their job.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show the number of over-70s in full or part-time work has risen constantly over the past 10 years.

It reached 497,946 in the first few months of this year, up 135 per cent since 2009. Almost one in 12 adults over 70 is now working, up from one in 22 a decade ago.
