Research reveals 'worst' road in Ireland for catching drivers out as speed vans pull in money

One road in Ireland has been coined as the ‘worst’ road for speeding offences as gardai bump up presence and speed vans rake in thousands.

In 2022 the stretch of road, located in the west of Ireland, saw the highest number of drivers issued with speeding tickets, fines, and penalty points.

Bóthar na dTréabh, which makes up a portion of the N6, is known as the 'Dirty Thirty' to locals in reference to the former 30 miles per hour speed limit, which is now at 50 kilometres per hour by law.

GoSafe, the organisation that enforces these speed limits, confirmed that it raked in over €325,000 in fines in 2022 - which marked a staggering €100,000 more than the second worst offending location on the list.

The figures were published last week by the Department of Justice, showcasing the number of drivers hit with fixed charge notices.

Additional data released by the Department also showed prosecutions for speeding in courts have had a very low success rate with Galway amongst the lowest at 13%.

Only 8% of prosecutions were successful in Co Meath while only 7% were successful in Co. Mayo.

Wexford had the most success with a rate of 24% while Donegal, Dublin, Longford, and Westmeath were in joint second at 22%.

In Ireland, if you drive over the speed limit, you will be slapped with 3 penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €160.

If you do not pay the fine within 28 days, it increases to €240.
