Research reveals North East coronavirus R rate at 0.9 as lockdown continues to ease

The North East's R number is currently at 0.9, according to a new study.

The figure was revealed in research from the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Disease, which was published on Sunday.

According to the information, which used data available up to June 21, the regional R numbers across the country range from 0.8 to 1.1.

In terms of the change in the number of daily cases in the North East, researchers concluded that they were "unsure" whether the number was increasing or decreasing.

In other parts of the country, including the South East, North West and London, the study claimed the number of daily cases was "likely decreasing".

The new research came as the Government revealed it would be announcing this week which lockdown measures would be lifted at the beginning of July.

Earlier in June, a joint study by Public Health England and Cambridge University found the Covid-19 reproduction rate in the North East and Yorkshire was around 0.89.

Among other measures, Prime Minister Boris Johnson could be set to announce that pubs, bars and restaurants could reopen as well as a change to the two-metre social distancing rule.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the latter would help children get back to school with the return of all pupils from all year groups scheduled for September.
