More than 500 research and innovation projects will be presented in the Thailand Research Expo 2018. The event will be kicked off today at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

Organised yearly by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), this year's research fair will focus on making the country "secure, prosperous and sustainable", according to NRCT secretary-general Prof Dr Sirirurg Songsivilai.

The event will have two major parts. One is seminars and forums with up to 120 topics. The other is the research fair.

The fair will deal with nine different topics: Security, agriculture, food and technology, industrial innovation, social development, medical and public health, energy, natural resources and environment, digital economy and logistics.

One of the research highlights is skincare cream made with crocodile blood. The prototype product is developed by the team of Dr Nisachon Jangpromma of Khon Kaen University. They found that crocodile blood has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents that can help revitalise skin cells. The team also develops a gel to be applied on wounds to reduce the risk of infection.

Further research projects to be presented at the exhibition include a modernised phraewa cloth (the queen of silk fabric), developed by a team from Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon; a new strain of pumpkin with higher yield and better quality, from the Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna in Lampang; or improved construction material for houses using composite sandwich walls, which can reduce construction time and improve energy efficiency, developed by Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Uthenthawai Campus. And that's just Rajamangala University.

There will also be a royal exhibition zone to commemorate King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the "Father Of Thai Research", and to honour HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun. There will also be an exhibition to present the works of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn through the development of information technology.

The princess will preside over the opening ceremony on Aug 10 at 9am.

The Thailand Research Expo 2018 will also host 100 research projects of university students. There will be innovation showcases of local communities, a research clinic to offer consultants to researchers or those who look for innovations, and the winners of the Thailand Research Expo 2018 Award will be announced.

The event is organised during Aug 9-13 from 9am to 6pm. Entrance is free.
