Rescuers called to Holy Island after car left stranded on causeway with rising tide

Lifesaving crews were called to Holy Island causeway after a car was left stranded as the tide was rising.

At around 1.40pm on Saturday, UK Coastguard asked a team from the Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat to help a man in the refuge box at Holy Island causeway in Northumberland.

It happened after the driver tried to cross over and his vehicle was left in a potentially dangerous position.

The man was brought to safety and his vehicle was to be recovered from the area when it was safe.

A spokesperson from Seahouses Lifeboat Station said: "The tide was still rising, and being a spring tide, would completely cover the causeway.

"The vehicle had attempted to cross contrary to the safe crossing times displayed at either sides of the causeway.

"Due to the cold and the anticipated big tide, it was considered necessary to evacuate the casualty to safety.

"Once safely brought ashore by the lifeboat, he was handed into the care of Seahouses Coastguard Rescue Team and Berwick Coastguard rescue team on the mainland end of the causeway.

"Arrangements were made to recover his vehicle when the tide receded. The inshore lifeboat was then recovered to its road trailer, and returned to station."

The safe crossing times for Saturday were between 6.20am until 12.45pm and from 6.40pm till 1.10am on Sunday. High tide at Holy Island was 2.56pm.
