Rescuers brave rough seas in search for missing fisherman off the coast of Co Wexford

Rescuers are currently braving rough seas in the search for a missing fisherman off the coast of Co Wexford.

It comes after another fisherman who was rescued last night after a boat sunk has sadly died in hospital.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a trawler that got into difficulty near Hook Head at around 10.30pm.

One man, who was in his 60s, was brought to safety by the Rescue 117 helicopter, but sadly later died in hospital.

However a second man who was on the boat is still missing and a search is currently underway.

Conducting the search are Irish Coast Guard Helicopters Rescue 117 and Rescue 116 as well Kilmore Quay and Fethard on Sea Coast Guard units alongside RNLI Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and Fethard.

Naval vessel LE Ciara arrived in the afternoon acting as the on-scene coordinator.

Fine Gael councillor for Kilmore, Wexford Jim Moore has described the tragedy as “a very sad opening to the beginning of 2020”.

A garda spokeswoman said this morning: "Last night Gardaí and the Coastguard were alerted to reports that a trawler had gone missing off the coast of Hook Head area with two men on board.

"Searches were carried out by the RNLI and R117 Helicopter.

"One male in his 60s was recovered from the water and taken to University Hospital Waterford where he has since passed away.

"Searches continue for the second man."
