Rescued hillwalker dies after spending night stranded in Scottish Uplands

One of the three elderly hillwalkers rescued after they had been missing overnight in the Scottish Uplands has died, Police Scotland has announced.

Three men, Bobby Thompson, 64, George Crosbie, 73, and Jeffrey Stewart, 74, did not return home as expected on Tuesday afternoon, prompting family members to raise the alarm.

An extensive search was launched on Tuesday night, but efforts by police and mountain rescue teams were hampered by poor weather conditions.

The website says the walkers were located on Wednesday when efforts resumed, aided by search dogs and a rescue helicopter, 2.5 miles east of the small village of Durisdeer.

A statement, released by Police Scotland, confirmed one of the three had died at the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, although they have not said who.

“The two other men are currently being treated for hypothermia in the hospital. Next of kin are being informed and the procurator fiscal has been informed,” it continued.
