Rescue teams dispatched to Brean beach after 'woman seen in water'

Rescue crews were called to Brean beach - after reports a woman had walked into the water holding her shoes above her head.

Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team was called by a member of staff at the National Trust Cafe at just after 4pm yesterday (October 27) to a report of a woman entering the water, holding her footwear.

The woman had then disappeared from their view. The team, assisted by beach wardens carried out a search of the area.

But all that was spotted was a person walking along the base of Brean Down in the alcove - an area popular with climbers.

Crews then kitted up a team to follow the water out along the route the woman may have taken.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team said: “As the tide receded we kitted up a team to follow the water out and investigate further along in the direction she was thought to be while stopping off to talk to the climbers along the way.

“After a brief chat with the climbers it was established that they had been ferrying their equipment to their climbing spot through the shallow water carrying it above their heads around the same time as the reports came in.

“With it fitting our information we had a brief chat with the team in the ops room who were happy that there was no one in the water and we could return to station.

“A good call as it would be a completely different story if someone had entered the water especially in these weather conditions.”

Anyone who spots someone in trouble along the coast should call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
