Rescue teams called to submerged car in River Taff in the centre of Cardiff

Emergency services have been called to a section of the River Taff in the centre of Cardiff after receiving reports of a submerged car.

Passersby alerted rescue teams this morning after the upturned vehicle was spotted in the water near Sophia Gardens at 7.55am.

Members of South Wales Fire and Rescue waded into search the vehicle which is thought to have ended up in the water after the river burst its banks during Storm Dennis.

Volunteers from RNLI Penarth and Penarth Coastguard were also in attendance.

It is not thought anyone was inside the vehicle.

Large areas of Bute Park and the Taff Trail end up submerged last month after the river levels reached the highest they'd been in the city for years.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "A search was conducted by fire service colleagues, and the car is believed to be a scrap vehicle which was washed in to the river during the recent storms."
