Rescue operation underway for pilot trapped on high voltage wire after Belgian jet crash

A Belgian fighter plane has crashed in France leaving one pilot caught on a high voltage electricity line.

Two pilots were ejected from the Belgian Air Force F-16 jet and both are believed to have survived, reports the BBC.

The plane crashed near Lorient in Brittany, northern France, the Belgian Air Force has said, and a rescue operation is underway to rescue the trapped pilot.

Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion before the aircraft plunged to the ground exploding into a fireball, reports the Mirror.

Local resident, Patrick Kauffer said: "My wife was in the house and she heard a huge explosion, followed by a second, she went out into the garden and saw the plane on fire."

"Yes, we can say it's a miracle, the wing of the plane tore off some of the roof on the north side of our house, the damage is impressive: the trees and the shed were on fire when my wife was evacuated ".

A national police spokeswoman said no injuries have been reported among residents in the area, the Associated Press reports.

She said about 100 police officers are at the crash site and are investigating what happened.
