Rescue operation underway as scallop boat grounded off Cumbria coast

Lifeboat crews are trying to rescue a stricken scallop boat which is grounded off the coast of West Cumbria.

Workington's RNLI Dorothy May White crew responded to the alert at 4.30am on Wednesday after they were contacted by the Belfast coastguard.

The 13-metre boat has run aground between Maryport and Silloth, just off Mawbray.

Other rescue crews from Silloth have been involved in the operation but they have been unable to free the boat because of the high tide.

One crewman is reportedly onboard, but thankfully is not thought to be injured, despite the ordeal.

A second attempt will be carried out at high tide later.

The Workington RNLI's Dorothy May White has been slightly damaged in the rescue operation, said the RNLI, and the "lads are on their way back to the station and will return at around 3pm".

They added: "Thanks to our colleagues at Silloth RNLI."
