Rescue operation launched after reports a boy had fallen into sea at Whitley Bay

A search and rescue operation was launched after concern that a teenager had fallen into the sea in North Tyneside.

However, police say there is no evidence that the boy has gone into the water following an emergency service search.

Lifeboat crews were called to the scene in Whitley Bay at 3pm on Friday after a caller reported that a teen who had been taking pictures at Browns Bay may have fallen into the water.

The police helicopter joined in the search but it appears to have been a false alarm. Officers are asking the boy to get in touch to say that he is okay.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 3pm today (Friday) we received a report of concern for a male in the Whitley Bay area.

“The caller was concerned that a teen who had taking photos at some rocks on the sea front at Browns Bay may have fallen into the water.

“Officers, Coastguard and NPAS have been deployed to the area to carry out searches as a precaution but at this time police have found no evidence that a boy has fallen in a water.

"If the boy who was in the area at the time has not fallen in the water then we would ask that he get in touch with police on 101 quoting log 566 05/06/20. Anyone who may have seen anything that could assist police is also asked to call 101."
