Rescue operation launched after injured man heard shouting for help from walled-in river

Mountain rescuers were called out to help rescue an injured man heard shouting for help after falling into a walled-in river.

A crew of 15 from the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team rushed out to the steep wooded area in Hyde on June 9.

A member of the public had alerted the ambulance service, but they were unable to find the man.

Rescuers found the man in a walled-in river at the bottom of a steep banking.

He was treated by a medic before being safely hauled onto the riverbank.

The man was then carried on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

He was taken to hospital with a number of injuries.

In a post on Facebook, the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said: "North West Ambulance Service had been alerted by a member of the public to a male shouting for help in a steep wooded area in Hyde.

"Unable to access or accurately locate the male, they contacted the team for assistance.

Upon arrival, OMRT members made their way into the wooded area and quickly located the male in a walled-in river at the bottom of a steep banking.

"Whilst medical aid was being given by a team medic, arrangements were made to get an NWAS paramedic, and extra kit, down to the cas site.

"The casualty was packaged on a team vacuum mattress & stretcher, and was evacuated along the riverbed to a section of wall which was lower in height, from where he was hauled onto the river bank.

"He was then carried to the NWAS ambulance and transported to hospital for treatment of various injuries.

"All kit was then taken back to base where it was cleaned, disinfected and dried, ready for the next callout.

"15 team members were involved for 2 hours & 33 minutes."
