Rescue operation after two people get into difficulty in the water in Blackrock, Co Louth

A rescue operation took place after two people got into difficulty in the water this afternoon.

The incident happened at Priest's Beach in the Co Louth village of Blackrock and the alarm was raised after 1pm.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter and Clogherhead RNLI rushed to the scene along with gardai and the ambulance service.

The helicopter landed in Blackrock village at around 2pm to help the people in difficulty and the pair have now been rescued.

It left the scene before 2.15pm.

It's believed that the two people who got into difficulty are being treated for mild hypothermia at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The gardai and RNLI have been contacted for comment.

A local Louth man said that the "winds have been gale force in the area for the past 24 hours and the weather has been very bad."

Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan said: "If anybody got into difficulty, I hope they are safe and well."

A woman praised the RNLI on social media: "They do amazing work, thank you folks.

"Hope everyone is ok."
