Rescue operation after British-flagged boat sinks near to Greek island

Eighteen people have been rescued from the sea after a tourist boat sunk off the coast of Greece.

The country's coastguard said two helicopters, three coastguard patrol boats, a private boat and two nearby vessels were searching for survivors near to the island of Milos.

A coastguard spokeswoman said “as far as we know”, all those involved are Greek, and they are in a “healthy” condition.

It was not immediately clear who had been on board the yacht or what their nationalities were, but media outlets reported that the boat was carrying a British flag.

An alarm was sounded to the port authorities on Thursday morning with reports that there was a boat sinking off the coast, according to the Mirror.

The cause of the sinking west and north-west of Milos has not yet been determined.

Speaking at the time of the rescue mission, Mayor of Milos Manolis Mikelis, said: "We have information for 17 people, we are in the process of collecting people from the sea.

"At the moment there is wind in the area and it is making a lot of waves, we were told about a yacht.

"With every reservation, the boat has been overturned."

The coastguard later confirmed that 18 people had been rescued.

They have all been taken to Milos.
