Rescue mission: woman 'falls 7 metres' in Hunter Street

EMERGENCY services have rescued a woman who "fell seven metres" and landed on an awning in Hunter Street just before 8am on Wednesday.

The area at the intersection of Hunter and Darby streets was shutdown for about an hour and the tram was stopped to give paramedics, police and NSW Fire and Rescue time to safely extricate the patient.

NSW Fire and Rescue brought in a cherry-picker to get the woman, believed to be in her 20s, down from the awning before she was taken in a stable condition to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

Four NSW Ambulance crews were called to the scene, including a specialist medical team. According to a NSW Ambulance spokesman the woman suffered a serious arm injury in the seven-metre fall.

As soon as the patient was transported to hospital police reopened the road and the tram returned to its normal timetable.

Police will investigate the circumstances leading up to the fall.
