Rescue helicopter rushes to scene after six people become trapped on Cork beach

A coastguard helicopter was called in as six people were airlifted off a beach in Co Cork yesterday.

The group had become trapped in the incoming tide on the beach at Rocky Bay between Kinsalea and Crosshaven.

The four men and two women were pushed against the base of a cliff from the tide, Cork Beo reports.

A 999 call was made - but the beach is inaccessible to lifeboats due to treacherous rocks and the Coast Guard made the decision to deploy the chopper.

A West Cork Rapid Response ambulance was also dispatched to the scene at around 4pm yesterday afternoon.

Valentia Coast Guard reports that units from both the Oysterhaven & Summer Cove Coast Guard and the Crosshaven Coast Guard - along with the Waterford-based Rescue 117 helicopter responded.

The helicopter was able to lift the trapped people - one by one - from the beach to the cliff-top above.

None of them needed medical assistance but they were shaken by their ordeal on the beach.

It was a very busy weekend for the rescue and emergency services as good weather brought crowds to the coast.

The RNLI was involved in several operations - the Ballycotton Lifeboat alone had two call-outs yesterday - assisting a fishing vessel hit by engine trouble south of the harbour and coming to the aid of a pleasure boat that also had engine trouble in Cobh Harbour.
