Rescue drama in East Lothian as kids get stuck on cliffs near Tantallon Castle

Coastguard teams were involved in a dramatic rescue operation after two children found themselves stuck on cliffs at an East Lothian beauty spot.

North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team – along with coastguard teams from Dunbar and Fisherrow, police, ambulance and fire crews – were called to the incident close to Tantallon Castle on Sunday afternoon.

When they arrived they found that two kids were stuck three quarters of the way up the cliffs below Gin Head, and a third person, the father of the children, was cut off by the tide at the foot of the cliffs.

RNLI North Berwick Lifeboat were called to attend and they were able to safely rescue the dad, however a rope system had to be set up to reach the children. Thankfully they were brought to safety, and were unhurt.

North Berwick Coastguard Rescue team shared details of the incident, which started with the callout around 1.20pm on Sunday, on social media.

They say: "With assistance from Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the coastguard teams recovered both children safely to the top of the cliff, both cold but unharmed following their ordeal.

"The father of the children did the right thing by calling for assistance having found them in their position instead of trying to attempt to scale the cliffs, which were found to be extremely slippy and covered in a thick layer of mud.

"Personnel from Scottish Ambulance Service and East Lothian Police were also on scene to assist.

"Remember if you see someone or something you are concerned about on the shoreline, cliff, mud or on the sea, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. If in doubt, call.

"There is an alternative contact number for the coastguard, 01224592334 where you can pass information."
