Rescue drama as pals jump into Scots river to help friend and end up needing saved

Two men risked their lives to save their friend who had fallen into a river while messing around on the bank.

A large rescue operation was deployed to a dam on the River Annan at around 3pm on Saturday, August 24 after all three ended up in difficulty.

One of the men slipped into the river, prompting the other two to frantically dive in to pull their friend out safely.

Police, coastguard and 15 firefighters were all eventually called to the scene to aid in their recovery.

All three were rescued by the multi-agency response and were checked by an ambulance crew on the scene.

Fire, police, ambulance and coastguard services were all called to the incident on the River Annan (Dumfries and Galloway Police Division)

Now, Police Scotland are urging people to be careful around water as the weather is expected to remain warm for the rest of today.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Police and emergency services were called at 3.05pm on Saturday, August 24, following a report that a teenage male got into difficulty whilst swimming the River Annan near to Annan Cemetery with two other friends.

"They raised the alarm and the police, fire and ambulance attended and the youth was rescued from the water by the fire service and taken to the DGRI. No condition update but don't believe any threat to life. No further police action. Referred to Coastguard for further infoormation.

“Please remember the dams and weirds located across the region are not a safe place to go swimming, they have extremely fast flowing water and entrapment obstacles that can overpower the best of swimmers.”
