A Scots rescue dog has been mauled to death by another hound in a “traumatic” attack at a football field.
Tragic Foxy was killed when an “aggressive” off-lead dog began to savage her in front of her owner..
Foxy and her owner were walking at the Jock Stein football pitches in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire when the male bull breed dog attacked.
Her other elderly dog was left with a broken leg and bite wounds, after the desperate pooch tried in vain to save its companion on Wednesday night.
The owner also sustained a bite to the hand from where she tried to intervene.
Sadly however, she was unable to save Foxy who was killed in the attack.
The “devastated” owner informed the rescue group who helped re-home Foxy, Ruff Start Rescue CIC, who took to Facebook to warn other owners.
The group's administrator Louise Gardner shared photos of Foxy and posted details of the ordeal online.
She said: “It is with the greatest sadness that myself and our team tell you this awful news.
“Last night whilst out walking her dogs our lovely friend was confronted with an off lead aggressive dog with no owner in sight.
“This dog attacked them and as a result our ruffer Foxy has sadly been killed.
“The dog in question is described as a large dark coloured Bull breed type, an entire male.
“We are told this has happened before with a dog of the same description.”
She added police had been informed and urged other dog walkers to take care.
Louise said: “This is a very popular area for dog walkers and also kids playing football.
“We cannot allow this to happen to any other dog or god forbid, a child.
“We are so thankful that her young son was not with her at the time.
“As you can imagine she is completely devastated and traumatised by what has happened.
“Sleep tight darling Foxy. You were loved beyond measure.”
The tragedy has prompted a wave of sympathy from social media users.
Tina Powers wrote: “Absolutely heartbreaking.”
Melanie Denning added: “That is awful, poor owners will have PTSD. ”
And Terri Kiteley said: “This is horrendous, words can’t express how terrible this is.”
Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
