Rescue charity calls for garda animal welfare unit to be set up after horrific donkey treatment

A leading horse rescue organisation has called on the Government to establish a garda animal welfare unit after rescuing a donkey it found completely abandoned.

My Lovely Horse Rescue, a welfare organisation that rehabilitates and rehomes unwanted, neglected and abused animals, has said that prosecutions need to be brought on those who treat animals cruelly within the State.

They said: "Ireland should be ashamed, the cruelty and neglect that animals are facing on a daily basis is insane!"

The Co Offally-based rescue charity posted a picture of a donkey that they found pounded, saying they couldn't just leave her there.

They said: "Ireland making a big fuss about a donkey in a recent movie, yet forgetting about all the poor donkeys that stand in pounds, unwanted.

"Only thing they know is the cruel life they had and now no future."

Two days ago, My Lovely Horse Rescue posted a distressing and graphic video of an abandoned horse, who had just had a foal and was attacked by another animal straight after.

The horse, which was dumped in a person's field, had a missing tail, a severe open infection, was underweight as well as being dehydrated. Rescue workers discovered her in the middle of the night.

The organisation is now calling on Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to establish a dedicated Garda Animal Welfare Unit to enforce laws against cruelty to animals.

They want a unit that can support other counties that don’t have the resources, a unit that can help make prosecutions even if out of their jurisdiction.

They are asking their following to email the garda commissioner directly.

"We know there are Gardaí that want a position like this, they want animal cruelty prosecutions. It’s time, we need this, it’s vital," they added.
