Republicans Consider Plan B Amid Impeachment Strategy Backtrack

Joe Biden U.S. President Joe Biden holds an event about the economy, at the White House in Washington

Democratic congressman Eric Swalwell from California discussed the latest developments regarding the potential impeachment of President Biden by Republicans. According to a news channel's newsletter, Republicans are considering alternative strategies as they may be backing off from their initial impeachment goal. One possibility being discussed is the idea of criminal referrals, potentially targeting Hunter Biden and even President Biden himself.

In a broader context, House Oversight Chair James Comrie highlighted the issue of referrals, suggesting that if the Department of Justice under Merrick Garland does not take any potential criminal referrals seriously, a future administration could revisit the matter. When asked about the likelihood of Donald Trump prosecuting Joe Biden if re-elected, Swalwell expressed his belief that Trump would indeed pursue such actions, citing Trump's past statements about seeking retribution and his desire to wield dictatorial powers.

Swalwell criticized the notion of pursuing criminal referrals without sufficient evidence, likening it to a futile endeavor akin to the fictional character Wile E. Coyote's repeated failed schemes. He emphasized that the focus should not be on targeting Biden without credible grounds and suggested that the ongoing efforts appeared to be driven by a refusal to accept Biden's presidency rather than genuine legal concerns.

Regarding the possibility of an impeachment vote on the House floor targeting President Biden, Swalwell dismissed the idea, stating that there are not enough votes to support such a move. He predicted that any impeachment attempt would result in the president being acquitted, labeling it as a pointless exercise that diverts attention from more pressing matters highlighted by Biden in his recent State of the Union address.
