1. Republicans mend broken fences
Prominent members of the Grand Old Party continue to kiss and make up after a bruising primary, with mega-donor Sheldon Adelson the latest to make an overture to Donald Trump.
Summary
I am endorsing Trump’s bid for president and strongly encourage my fellow Republicans ... to do the same. The alternative to Trump being sworn in as the nation’s 45th president is frightening.
– Sheldon Adelson, on fellow tycoon Donald Trump
2. Barack Obama’s ‘bathroom bill’ decree
Obama let schools know that discriminating against transgender students would end in lawsuits, and social conservatives found the new hill that they’re willing to die on.
Summary
I oppose that piece of policy. I think it is an executive overreach, and it’s a topic we’re likely to bring up in a future hearing before the taskforce that I chair.
– Rep Steve King, on bathroom bills
3. Donald Trump says ‘everything is a suggestion’
Asked about his plan to ban all foreign Muslims from entering the US, Trump called it “just a suggestion” – along with anything else he might propose over the course of the campaign.
Summary
Look, anything I say right now, I’m not the president. Everything is a suggestion – no matter what you say, it’s a suggestion.
– Donald Trump, about his platform
4. Zuckerberg: Facebook is ‘conducting a full investigation’
Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has invited “leading conservatives and people from across the political spectrum” to talk about accusations of the company’s political bias.
Summary
If we find anything against our principles, you have my commitment that we will take additional steps to address it. In the coming weeks, I’ll also be inviting leading conservatives and people from across the political spectrum to talk with me about this and share their points of view.
– Mark Zuckerberg, in a Facebook post (natch)
5. Clinton nabs a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ endorsement
The Los Angeles Times has endorsed Hillary Clinton, although the headline leaves a bit to be desired: “For all her faults, Hillary Clinton is vastly better prepared than Bernie Sanders.”
Summary
Clinton may seem inauthentic to some or to lack that drink-a-beer-with-me quality that voters often look for in a candidate. But she has a grasp of the complexities of government and policy that is unmatched by any of the other candidates who ran for president this year.
– The Los Angeles Times editorial board, on Hillary Clinton
6. Trump pretended to be his own PR flack
Nineties-era reporters and writers have revealed details about Donald Trump public relations veteran “John Miller,” also known as “John Barron,” also known as ... Donald Trump.
Summary
He really didn’t want to make a commitment. He’s coming out of a marriage, and he’s starting to do tremendously well financially.
– “John Miller,” also known as Donald trump, about Trump dumping Marla Maples for future French first lady Carla Bruni
