Republican Congressman calls for restoring maximum pressure on Iran

Administration's Middle East policy is failing, and deterrence has failed with Iran.

Title: Republican Congressman Calls for Strong Response to Iranian Proxy Attacks

Republican Congressman Mike Walz of Florida, a former Green Beret and experienced combat veteran, has called for a robust and decisive response to the escalating proxy attacks by Iranian-backed militias in the Middle East. In a recent interview, Congressman Walz criticized the Biden administration's Middle East policy and argued that appeasement and de-escalation efforts have failed to deter Iran.

According to Congressman Walz, all roads lead back to Tehran when it comes to the activities of proxy groups such as Hezbollah, the Houthis, Hamas, and various militias in Iraq. He pointed out that the recent deadly attacks, including the killing of three service members, indicate a lack of deterrence on the part of the Iranian regime.

The congressman emphasized the need for the administration to set aside politics and adopt a more aggressive approach to make Iran pay for its actions. He suggested using cyber operations and targeted attacks on Iranian operatives in Iraq and Syria as viable options to hold Iran accountable. He criticized the administration's current strategy of bombing empty warehouses, stating that such actions do not contribute to restoring deterrence.

In response to concerns about the effectiveness of previous actions, particularly the strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, Congressman Walz argued that those incidents did have a deterrent effect. He acknowledged that attacks on U.S. personnel and interests continued but highlighted that subsequent attacks were significantly reduced in number and magnitude.

To address the root causes of Iranian aggression, Congressman Walz advocated for a return to maximum pressure on Iran, emphasizing the importance of economic sanctions and cutting off their sources of revenue. He highlighted the success of previous measures in crippling Iranian-backed groups due to their lack of resources during the previous administration.

Moreover, the congressman warned against underestimating the interconnectedness of various proxy groups and their shared goal of removing the United States from the Middle East and threatening Israel. He criticized the recent characterization of the conflict as contained, emphasizing that such statements misrepresent the reality on the ground and undermine the seriousness of the situation.

Congressman Walz stressed that a holistic approach is needed to effectively counter Iranian influence, including targeting both proxies and the operatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He urged the administration to recognize Iran's ultimate objectives and take decisive action rather than relying on a return to an Iran deal based on appeasement.

The congressman's remarks come amidst growing concerns about escalating proxy attacks by Iranian-backed groups and the need for a clear and effective response to protect American interests in the Middle East.
