Republic of Ireland vs Portugal betting preview including odds, prediction and team news

There is nothing but pride to fight for with Stephen Kelly's side as Republic of Ireland welcome Portugal who are aiming to reclaim the top spot in Group A in the World Cup 2022 qualifying round.

Ireland are 9/1 longshots with Grosvenor Sport while Portugal are the favourites at 33/100 and a draw is 21/5.

The Bhoys in Green have had a torrid time in qualification as their search for their first World Cup finals since 2002 continues and they find themselves below minnows Luxembourg - who managed to pick up a 1-0 win in Dublin on matchday two.

They had to wait another four qualifiers before they picked up their first win of the campaign when they faced Azerbaijan with the addition of twp draws against them and Serbia makes Kelly's recent form more reasonable than the winless run he suffered beforehand.

But it was too little too late for Ireland and they will now have to wait another three years for the chance to feature in a major tournament.

For now though, they can begin to build for Euro 2024.

Tips

  • Diogo Jota to score anytime - 7/5
  • Portugal to win, over 2.5 goals and both teams to score - 47/20

Team news

Injury has forced a late squad change in attack with Bristol City winger Callum O'Dowda replacing Cardiff City forward James Collins while Brighton & Hove Albion's Aaron Connolly has not been selected.

Jayson Molumby and Alan Browne are both available after serving suspensions against Azerbaijan while teenage goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu likely to start as he looks to top the last time he played Portugal when he denied a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

For Portugal, Nuno Mendes will serve a suspension so Man City's Joao Cancelo could start at left-back.
