Republic of Ireland striker Amber Barrett signs professional deal with German club

Donegal striker Amber Barrett has announced that she will be turning professional this summer, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal.

The Republic of Ireland star, who bagged 30 goals this season with Dublin club Peamount United, will join German Bundesliga side FC. Koln this summer.

Joining in July, Barrett claimed that now is the ideal time to make the leap into the pro game after finishing her studies this year.

She said: "Going pro is ideal and recently I've gotten in touch with Cologne FC who are going to take me on a two-year contract.

"I've always believed in education and getting the best out of college that you can. The boys are scouted much younger and some of them end up coming back and it's a lot more difficult than people think. Some people get very homesick.

"The schedule I got from Cologne, it's the equivalent to three weeks training with Peamount in a week," she told SportsJoe's PlayXPlay podcast.

The 23-year-old is expected to be part of Colin Bell's squad when they kick off their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign on September 3 as they host Montenegro.
