Republic of Ireland players out of contract this summer including Stephen Ward and Glenn Whelan

As the season draws to a close, attention switches to the Euro qualifiers early next month - but for many players across the Irish sea it brings a period of uncertainty.

There's several Irish stars currently in the last few weeks of their contracts and facing the prospect of finding a new club or staring down the barrel at retirement.

Here's seven Irish players who are out of contract this summer:

Stephen Ward

FAI fortunes on an upward curve as UEFA and FIFA lend their support

The Burnley man has been out with injury for most of the season, making just 11 appearances and manager Sean Dyche confirmed recently that the 33-year-old's time with the Clarets was up. His career surely isn't over, he's a good option for plenty of Championship clubs at the very least.

Glenn Whelan

The Clondalkin man just doesn't know how to quit. After terrific performances for Ireland and a renaissance of sorts under Aston Villa, his contract is up after the play-off final and Mick McCarthy recently said he wouldn't be surprised if he had another year in the Premier League - either would we.

Paul McShane

UEFA offer multi-million euro dig out to cash-strapped FAI

This one is confirmed, the Reading man has said his goodbyes after four years as captain. McShane's Ireland days are long behind him, but at 33 is another option for quite a few Championship clubs.

Marc Wilson

Bolton have plenty of problems off the pitch, but Marc Wilson won't be going down on board the sinking ship. The former Stoke City and Ireland defender still has plenty to offer.

Cillian Sheridan

Irish football's great journeyman, Sheridan has played with ten clubs from seven different countries in an incredible career. His deal with Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand is up this summer, who knows where the striker could be off to next?

Kieren Westwood

Donegal punter pockets almost €6,000 from one of the most ridiculous bets you will ever see

Shotstopper Westwood is approaching the latter days of his career at 34, and it looks like his five years at Sheffield Wednesday are up. The club have reportedly offered him an extra year, but word is he isn't happy with it. Plenty will be interested in his services.

Wes Hoolahan

Is this the end of one of Ireland's best this decade's career? The midfielder joined West Brom after leaving Norwich and impressed in a short term deal to earn an extension until the end of this season. But the 36-year-old hasn't featured since the appointment of caretaker boss James Shan. If he's going to play on, it could well be in Tolka Park.
