Republic of Ireland player tests positive for Covid-19 ahead of England game

A Republic of Ireland player has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of Thursday's friendly clash with England.

The Boys in Green face Gareth Southgate's side at Wembley ahead of their UEFA Nations League clashes with Wales and Bulgaria.

Confirming the positive test in a statement this evening, the FAI said: "The Football Association of Ireland can confirm that one member of the senior men's international team has tested positive for COVID-19.

"The player has been isolated from the group as per COVID-19 protocols, and the HSE and UEFA have been informed of this development. The player is asymptomatic and feeling well.

"There are no close contacts of the player and the rest of the staff and squad tested negative ahead of Thursday's international friendly against England."

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny will be hoping the problem is contained.

His squad suffered multiple Covid issues during last month's crucial international window.

Adam Connolly and Adam Idah missed the Euro play-off in Slovakia as they were deemed close contacts of a positive case when they moved to unallocated seats in the back row of their flight to Bratislava.

Then Callum Robinson, John Egan, Alan Browne and Callum O’Dowda sat out the subsequent Nations League home game with Wales as close contacts to a positive case, leaving him short of bodies on the bench for the drawn tie.

To compound manager Stephen Kenny's problems, Jack Byrne missed the Nations League clash in Finland having contracted the virus.
