Republic of Ireland player re-tests as false positive for Covid-19

The Ireland player who tested positive for Covid-19 this morning has tonight re-tested as a false positive.

But the player will have to be retested a second time before getting the green light to travel to Finland with the squad tomorrow.

FAI chief Gary Owens said: “This negative result following a positive has been reported to UEFA and the HSE.

“We are in communication with both UEFA and the HSE regarding the player’s availability for the Finland game."

Pending the all-clear from the second re-test, it is a positive development for manager
Stephen Kenny.

He saw five players ruled out of Sunday's game with Wales for Covid-related reasons.

This morning, the Ireland camp was thrown into further disarray after the results of last night’s round of UEFA testing came to light.

The second player - who was asymptomatic - tested positive for the virus but was re-tested by the FAI today in the hope of returning a false positive.

The squad was due to travel to Helsinki today but the FAI changed those plans last night to allow for any fallout from today’s test results.

Before yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Wales, it was confirmed that one player had tested positive and four others were deemed close contacts.

Callum Robinson, John Egan, Alan Browne and Callum O’Dowda were the four close contacts ruled out of the Aviva Stadium clash.

The player at the centre of today's drama is not among that quartet.

Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah have rejoined the squad after missing the Slovakia playoff in controversial circumstances.

And Kenny has also added Dara O’Shea, Jason Knight, Ryan Manning and Ronan Curtis to the fold for the Finland game.
