Republic of Ireland player ratings from 2-1 defeat to Portugal

Gavin Bazunu 7: The goalkeeper initially denied Ronaldo his 110th international goal with a brilliant penalty save. Erratic at times and his error led to the spot kick.

Seamus Coleman 8: Composure personified and led by example with his positional sense, tackling and organisational skills. Everton man was superb.

Dara O'Shea 6: Involved in the bizarre spat with Ronaldo over the spot-kick and then injured in the tackle in the 32nd minute on Jota that led to his booking and exit. Strong to then.

Shane Duffy 8: Towering in the air and a real leader in the back all evening. Restored to the side and the Derryman was outstanding.

John Egan 7: Won’t forget this night too quickly with his fine evening’s work in defence capped by his first senior goal for his country.

Matt Doherty 8: Calm and assured in the opening quarter when the Irish needed cool nerves. Best display yet for his country.

Jeff Hendrick 7: Got through a mountain of gritty work and found himself fed a hospital pass by Bazunu for the penalty when he clipped Fernandes’ heels.

Josh Cullen 7: Best showing in the green shirt to date on his 10th appearance. Sat effectively in midfield with telling passes probing the Portuguese defence.

Jamie McGrath 7: Showed some understandable nerves early on in his senior debut but settled well, with his corner for Egan’s goal a real peach of a delivery.

Adam Idah 7: Justified his selection with his his hold up play excellent against two top-class central defenders, and work-rate as impressive.

Aaron Connolly 6: With so little recent football under his belt the Brighton striker can be well pleased with his display if sometimes prone to theatrics.

Subs:

Andrew Omobamidele 6: In for this senior debut on 35 for O’Shea, settled impressively.

James McClean 6: In for Connolly in the 72nd minute. Great low shot saved late on.

Jayson Molumby: On for McGrath in the 90th minute.

James Collins: Replaced Idah in the 90th minute
